Three members of the school’s FCCLA organization went to the Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events located at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Des Moines last April 3 – 5, 2016.

The STAR events are few prominent contests organized by the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The STAR events are composed of different individual and group competitions in which FCCLA members are acknowledged for their talents and skills regarding life events and planning.

Shelby Kentner and Esmeralda Garcia received a Silver Award for the category Focus on Children, while Trinity Miler was elected to be this year’s State Vice President of Finance. Not only that, Miler will be heading to San Diego, California this summer for nationals.

Miler said, “The competition included 12 candidates, all of which were wonderful people. We gave our speeches, 3 minutes or less in length, during opening session. My STAR event went well. I got a silver for my STAR event. At 9 am, Tuesday morning, we found out whether or not we got an office. I am now the 2016 – 2017 Vice President of Finance. Nationals is in San Diego, California. I am super excited and cannot wait. My goal is to go to Nationals all four years of high school, and so far with determination, I am going to make it.”

In line with this, Shelby Kentner described the STAR event not solely as a competition, but also a place of fellowship and meeting new people.

“The contest is fun because you get to meet new people and make new friends,” Kentner said.

Clarke’s FCCLA organization has been on top of things since the beginning, and the school is excited for what they have in store for the community.
